Kudos For High-Velocity Air Conditioners
Cool it. Whether or not you have got an older home, you do not have to resign yourself to living without the comforts of central air-conditioning. A leading edge technology called high-velocity air-con can be added to virtually any home-even those without existing ductwork.
How It Operates
Also known as “mini-duct” systems, high-velocity air conditioning usually uses an outside compressor to cool down the air, mixed with a hi-pressure blower (generally mounted in the loft).
Instead of awkward metal ductwork, this technology, developed by SpacePak, uses flexible tubes only two inches in diameter. The insulated tubes can be threaded behind walls or within closets without damaging sheetrock or plaster. This makes the system much quieter than air-con thru traditional metal ductwork.
A mini-duct system also dehumidifies the air better. The high-pressure blower compresses the air and allows it to be in contact with the cooling coils longer-which decreases the temperature and removes more humidity.
It’s All Central
In actual fact “high-velocity” and mini-duct” systems are just different names for the same type of super-efficient and snug central aircon systems. These systems are very quiet, distribute the cool air evenly all though your home and dehumidify extraordinarily effectively.
The words “high velocity” and “pressure” could make you think these systems are loud. In fact you can barely hear them running and there's no air movement sound at the miniscule outlets.
In two-story houses, the mini-ducts are run down from the attic room through the corners of the closets or within walls to the first floor. In a single-story house, the entire system is located in the attic with outlets in the ceiling below.
SpacePak’s mini-duct systems use normal, high-efficiency, out of doors air-conditioning compressor units. With this mini-duct system, cool air blows out from tiny two-inch openings in the ceiling or high on the walls. You can hardly spot the outlets when they are painted the exact same color as the room. For an ornamental look, natural wood outlets are available.
